Although Haru is mentally challenged, he has a much better
understanding of life than other people. When he met Eun-hye,
who pretended to be a teacher to run away from her involvement
in a scam, he fell in love but got rejected. Knowing that
the reason behind is his condition, he'll do anything just
to get smarter.
Dong-jae is obsessed with his experiment. And because a similar
project failed 7 years ago, nobody supported his proposal.
But when he found out that Haru is the best candidate for
the surgery, he used Eun-hye's feelings to make Haru voluntarily
undergo the critical procedure.
Eun-hye was taken into jail just before Haru's operation.
After months of feeling responsible for Haru's decision, she
went back to confront Dong-jae as soon as she was released.
To her surprise, she met a different Haru. He became smarter
and more sophisticated. Even though he still has strong feelings
towards Eun-hye, he chose to ignore her thinking that he was
abandoned.
Eun-hye was hired to become part of the project. Being together
more often, she finally sees Haru's feelings. Although he
has changed a lot, Haru still believes that there is more
to what he could offer Eun-hye. He thought that giving her
convenience and money would make her happier. Because of this,
he managed to get himself involved in illegal gambling.
Just as everybody thought that the experiment went completely
successful, Haru started to feel uneasy. His condition worsens
when the side effects of the operation piled up. To protect
Eun-hye from being hurt, he decided to push her away. But
Eun-hye stood by his side and made him realize that what is
more important is their love.
Haru finally decided to undergo another operation to bring
back his old self again. Although nobody knows if he could
escape death by doing it, he took chances just to be with
Eun-hye longer.
It was interesting start. Since I don't have any clue of
what the story is all about (and I haven't heard of Flowers
For Algernon where it was inspired from), I find the first
two episodes very catchy. The way the characters were introduced
and the story was developed, its kind of moving fast and exciting.
And having fresh faces on board completes the best first impression.
But sadly, in the mid part, it shifted to be a little bit
dragging. I don't know if it has something to do with Haru's
character change but it looks like the story got stuck in
a same problem longer than it should be. It's a good thing
that before the series ended, it came back stronger.
Yoo Gun's good looks caught my attention. Although I haven't
seen him in any other dramas or movies, his smile and expressive
eyes made me watch the serires without expecting anything
from his performance. But seeing him in each episodes made
me realize that he ain't just a face. He could definitely
act and he does it very good. I like it when he gets all hyped
when he sees Eun-hye. He is like a kid who gets to see his
favorite toy. So cute but not annoyingly immature. Even when
he already had the surgery, sometimes, I still get to see
the before Haru. Weird though. Maybe because I was so fond
of him when he does those playful scenes during his pre-op
stage.
Ok-bin did an okay performance but sometimes, there are some
scenes that I don't see any emotions. Aside from that, she
got this mannerism that is kind of irritating sometimes. Although
its no biggie, I can't help but notice that she does bite
her lips almost always when either thinking or reacting. But
other than that, she did just as well as Yoo Gun.
Jong-hyuk's strong feature fits his personality in the series.
He got the intensity of portraying an arrogant and insensitive
person. It is so effective that you'll hate him for playing
with Eun-hye's heart and manipulating Haru.
Other than the performance and the story flow, I also liked
the way the characters think about relationship and life.
Although it basically circled on "Dong-jae" playing
God and the power of love between the characters, they managed
to end it with something viewers can contemplate on. It may
be predictable but I think, there's no better way to finish
the series than this.
UP AND COMING TALENTS Kim Ok-bin:
'greedy' actress
KOREAN HERALD [ 02.09.2006 ]
Maybe even God would do anything for actress Kim Ok-bin,
the angelic heroine of TV drama "Hello, God". But
right now, instead of a prayer for success and fame, the 20-year-old
actress probably wants to ask the Almighty for a nice long
nap.
In less than a year after stepping into the entertainment
world, Kim has become one of the busiest actresses in Korea.
Playing the heroine Eun-hye in KBS primetime drama "Hello,
God", Kim has been following a tight shooting schedule
which allows her less than two hours of sleep each day.
Unable to cope with the work, Kim fainted during a recent
shoot and was sent to the hospital immediately. But with the
shooting on hold waiting for the heroine to return, Kim could
not even allow herself to rest on the hospital bed for more
than a few hours. "I'm fine, really", the actress
told reporters who had rushed to the hospital on the day.
"I have so many things to do that I don't even have the
time to be sick!"
First getting her face known to the public as an internet
"eoljjang", a Korean slang term standing for good-looking
men and women, Kim proved that beauty was not her only strength
with impressive acting in her first movie "Whispering
Corridors 4: Voice" last year.
